A good night’s sleep is commonly defined as:
- six to eight hours of uninterrupted sleep,
- awakening refreshed (physically and mentally), clear-headed
- no daytime sleepiness issues
Yet, one in two adult Canadians report having trouble going to sleep or staying asleep. Chronic insomnia is defined as a sleep disturbance for three or more nights/week for three or more months, with difficulty falling and staying asleep. This can result in distress and impaired daily function, as well as increases in chronic stress and poor mental health.
